Two cases in the apparent starvation death of a Boone County teenager will be tried separately.

The decision was made Friday during a pretrial hearing which involved the teen’s mother, Julie Miller and her grandmother, Donna Stone, who were both indicted on charges of murder by a parent, guardian or custodian by refusal or failure to provide necessities and child neglect resulting in death.

The charges stem from the death of 14-year-old Kyneddi Miller whose body was found at a Morrisvale home in April 2024.

Investigators described Kyneddi’s body as “emaciated to a skeletal state” and court documents allege family members failed to supply the teen with “necessary food and medical care during the months immediately preceding the death.”

Kyneddi’s grandfather, Jerry Stone, was also charged in the death but based on recommendations from mental health care professionals, has been found incompetent to stand trial.

The death led to investigations regarding practices and policies of West Virginia State Police and Child Protective Services in addition to discussions on homeschool regulations in the state.
