WVU stifles Pitt's offense to win 71-49 in men's basketball edition of Backyard Brawl

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WCHS) — Early in the college football season, the West Virginia Mountaineers hosted the Pittsburgh Panthers in Morgantown for the Backyard Brawl and won in overtime.
Early in the men's college basketball season, It was the same song, second verse – only this time, no overtime was needed.
WVU defeated Pitt 71-49 in the 192nd matchup between the two teams on Thursday night, extending their Backyard Brawl record to 102-90 in men's hoops. The win also ended Pitt's unbeaten 2025 season while simultaneously extending WVU's.
It was a team effort for the Mountaineers, with four of them scoring at least 10 points on the night, led by Harlan Obioha with 19. Pitt struggled with shooting all night, with its leading scorer Cameron Corhen putting up just 12 points. Corhen did come up with a double-double though, posting 10 rebounds to boot.
Despite Pitt taking as much as a 21-14 lead just over halfway through the first half, WVU's defense overwhelmed the Panthers, holding Pitt to just 25% on three-pointers and and just under 38% on field goals, including a span of around 10 minutes without a field goal.
WVU also forced 12 turnovers against the Panthers and had a 32 to 20 advantage in the paint.
"I thought the maturity of our team was on full display because we never shied away internally or externally what this game meant to the state, the people of West Virginia and how passionate it is to this fanbase," Mountaineers' head coach Ross Hodge said in his post-game press conference of his first Backyard Brawl rivalry game. "We talked about it, we knew it, we didn't run away from it, we didn't hide from it.
"At the same time, we knew when the ball tipped, we were gonna have to go out there and execute and play within ourselves."
Hodge also opened his post-game press conference by extending his condolences to the family of Steve Lipscomb, the miner who lost his life at Rolling Thunder Mine in Nicholas County after his team struck an unexpected pocket of water that flooded the mine.
Pitt falls to 3-1 and looks to right the ship back home against Bucknell on Monday at 7 p.m. That game will be streamed on ACC Extra.
Meanwhile, WVU improves to 4-0 and will remain at home for its fifth straight game to open the season, taking on Lafayette, also at 7 p.m. on Monday. That game will be streamed on ESPN+.
