WVU leads wire-to-wire in 29-22 victory over Colorado

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WCHS) — The West Virginia Mountaineers, donning helmets that featured a patriotic state outline of West Virginia, hosted Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes at Milan-Puskar Stadium in Morgantown on Saturday afternoon.
An early safety put WVU on top early, and the Blue and Gold never relinquished the lead, eventually winning by a score of 29-22 over the Buffaloes.
It's the second straight victory for the Mountaineers after they scored a 45-35 upset on the road over then-ranked No. 22 Houston last week. It's also WVU's second consecutive win (and second overall) in Big 12 Conference play this season.
The win also keeps WVU's hopes at a bowl game alive, as the Mountaineers need to win all of their remaining games to qualify for a bowl game this season.
True freshman QB Scotty Fox Jr. earned his first home win as the Mountaineers' starter, going 17/28 for 202 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions on the afternoon. Fox also ran the ball 17 times for 58 yards.
Curtis Jones Jr., normally a linebacker, took his first career snaps for WVU as a running back, scoring two touchdowns on just three rushes all day totaling nine yards. Ryan Ward was the recipient of Fox's lone touchdown pass.
Colorado elected to start true freshman QB Julian Lewis against the Mountaineers over Kaidon Salter, the Liberty transfer who especially struggled against Arizona last week. Lewis, who will start for the Buffaloes for the remainder of the season, went 22/35 for 299 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
West Virginia's defense also put Lewis through the ringer, sacking him seven times throughout the afternoon.
Colorado falls to 3-7 on the year and 1-6 in Big 12 play. The Buffaloes have an off-week before hosting the Arizona State Sun Devils in Boulder, Colo., on Nov. 22. Game time and television coverage is still to be determined.
West Virginia improves to 4-6 on the season and 2-5 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers will actually play Arizona State the week before Colorado does, making the trip to Tempe, Ariz. on Saturday, Nov. 15 for its final road game of the year. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m., while television coverage can be found on TNT, TruTV and HBO Max.
