Virginia's dominant first half lifts Cavaliers past Marshall 104-78

The Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team traveled to John Paul Jones Arena to take on the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon.

A strong first half from Virginia that left them with a 61-33 lead at halftime ultimately propelled the Cavaliers to an eventual 104-78 win over the Herd.

Thijs De Ridder was Virginia's top scorer, putting up 23 points. Dallin Hall and Malik Thomas also posted 18 points apiece.

For the Herd, Landen Joseph had a strong effort, leading Marshall in scoring with 22 points. Matt Van Komen earned his second double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Wilson Dubinsky and Noah Otshudi also reached 10 points apiece.

Virginia bested Marshall in overall shooting (52% to 43%) and three-pointers (43% to 29%), while forcing 15 Marshall turnovers that converted into 25 points.

The loss is Marshall's first of the young season. Falling to 3-1, the Thundering Herd will now look ahead to a matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday back at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
