GRANDVIEW, W.Va. (WCHS) — John and Janet Mize build things. The couple built their own home, the family law practice and recently completed their most unique structure, a geodesic dome vacation rental located in the Grandview and Fayetteville areas of the New River Gorge.

"We knew we wanted to do something unique," John said. "Something that would stand out in the market."

Mission accomplished! Unlike the typical plastic covering stretched over a frame, Country Domes is made of three -pane glass and steel which offers fantastic insulation from the cold of winter and the heat of summer.

"You see some of those domes in the area, they are more like a tent," John explained. "I started looking for a hard shell dome."

The Mize's found what they were looking for with a company called Ecodome.

After purchasing the property, John flew his drone over the area to see exactly what they were facing with construction.

"It was a swamp," John recalled. "There was a pond here but it was in the shape of a heart. Together we just knew that we should do a couples retreat."

That's exactly what Country Domes is, a couples-only retreat with an emphasis on romance and escape.

From the unique furniture, heart shaped rose petals on the king-sized bed and a jacuzzi hot tub with all the amenities, this place simply oozes romance.

"We don't allow pets or children because we want two people to show up and put the rest of the world to the side," Mize said. "Leave the hustle and bustle of their normal life the second they enter the property, and just focus on each other."

With any new venture there's risk involved, you simply don't know how the public will react until you open the doors. That question was answered quickly for the Mizes.

"The response has been amazing," Janet said. "We opened in May (2025) and we've only had one or two days open since then. A lot of times they'll immediately text us and tell us how great it is so that makes you feel good."

John echoed his wife's sentiment.

"It's therapeutic for us when people text us and say, 'You thought of everything, this place is beautiful. We can't wait to come back.'"
