Traveling WV: Scots Marketplace & Greenhouse
VIENNA, W.Va. (WCHS) — In the late 1970s, Scot Witkosky of Wood County had an opportunity he couldn't pass up.
He and his wife already had a small lawn and garden business, but they were looking to expand. A piece of property became available and he jumped on it.
"My father started the business in the early 70s," Madeson Barr, co-owner of Scots Marketplace and Greenhouse, said. "This current property came up for sale, he and my grandfather cleared and excavated it and built the store in 1982."
Through the years, the business has grown into a multifaceted destination that is challenging to describe unless you've actually been there. The greenhouse remains, but an impressive marketplace has been added, a large gift shop, a bakery, and even a European inspired sweet shop. What's not to love?
Trying to compete primarily as a garden center against the larger box stores such as Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart proved to be quite difficult. Barr and her team had to think outside of the box.
"Over the last 10 years we've really branched out into more of a marketplace, so we have fresh local produce, we grow all of our own annuals in the greenhouse, and we make all of our own pies on Fridays" she said.
One aspect, that is probably the most brilliant idea I've heard of in a while, is The Man Cave.
"We added extra seating in the marketplace, we call it 'The Man Cave' so the men can hang out while the women shop or the kiddos can sit in there," Barr said.
The latest addition to this ever expanding business is truly unique: a sweet shop. But not just any sweet shop, Scots Marketplace definitely adheres to the saying go big or go home.
"We looked at European-style garden centers and that's where Sugar Grove started," Barr said. "We have 25 different flavors, we do our own cold brew in house from local roasted coffees as well, we do milkshakes and sundaes."
Perhaps the hidden gem of Scots is the gift loft upstairs featuring hundreds of items for every member of the family. If you can't find it up there, you probably won't find it anywhere.
It doesn't take long to realize that Barr and her team love what they do, and more importantly, love where they do it.
"I genuinely love Appalachia, I love West Virginia, our staff takes very good care of our customers from the moment they walk in, to the moment they walk out," Barr said.
