West Virginia's coolest small town has gotten even cooler.

Fayetteville, located on the rim of the New River Gorge, has long been a magnet for outdoor adventure. Whitewater rafting, hiking, rock climbing, hunting and fishing are just a few of the activities readily available to residents and visitors alike.

Possibly the most popular sport in the area is mountain biking. The city has invested in a new mountain bike skills area at the city park.

"The project in the woods, the bike skills area is unique," Fayetteville town manager Matt Diederich said. "It helps riders of all skill levels."

Riders can develop their skills in a park setting then utilize those skills on the many miles of trails in the area.

There are three different circuits available to cater to any skill level of mountain biker. Think of it like a green circle ski slope compared to a black diamond.

"We have 16 different features and it's progressive," Diederich explained. "One line doesn't have any features. Another one has wide features not far off the ground for the beginners, and then you have an intermediate one with skinnier features and higher off the ground. It's designed to capture all skill levels."

Another feature riders can enjoy is the paved pump track located in a more open area of the park.

"This is our second year for the pump track," Diederich said. "It came out of congressionally directed spending. We were able to do two projects along with the city of Oak Hill, the pump track and the skills area."

Another added benefit is the area's connectivity to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

Riders can access all the trails available in the national park directly from Fayetteville's mountain bike skills area.

The reaction to the new skills area has been off the charts.

"It's been great," Diederich added. "It blows my mind how every time I've been out there somebody's on it using it. Word of mouth travels, once they find it they love it and tell everybody about it, I think that's the key."
