Monday marks back-to-school day for students in Kanawha County.

Eyewitness Witness news wants to get your opinion on what your biggest concern/fear is as students return to school. Take our poll below.

The county has new SEL protocol this year, which stands for social and emotional learning.

Promoting the students and staff social and emotional well-being is one of the county's main goals this school year.

In Charleston, Kenna Elementary School is using this as an opportunity to really build the culture in the school.

There is a dedicated counselor who helps students who need a little extra support.

“The SEL portion of it is just things that we can do within out school as far as supporting students that may need extra support with social emotional learning or coping - things like that,” Kenna Elementary School Principal Natalie Vaughan said.

Staff is also working to bridge the gap with academics. Kenna Elementary has teachers who specialize in a subject, who work with students to enhance learning for those students who may have fallen behind during the pandemic.

Zoey Morrison, math interventionist, wants parents to know its okay if their student needs extra help.

"Everyone through the pandemic has struggled in certain areas and missed a lot of things with at-home learning. It's totally normal. We're here to support your kids and close the gaps we've unfortunately had," she said.

Alicia Eldridge, a parent and reading interventionist says she just there to help.

"I'll be pushing in with the kids in the classroom, and helping them if they're at a lower level and just giving them a little extra help they may need to succeed,"

The county also has a back-to-school webpage it just launched to answer all your questions. It has everything in one place, including new enrollment information, where you can catch the bus, menus and immunization requirements.
