With Kanawha County students heading back to school Monday, time is running out to update their immunizations.

Dr. Steven Eshenaur with the Kanawha Charleston Health Department said the county has a very high vaccination rate – about 99%.

Eshenaur said that is a good thing, especially since doctors are now starting to see new cases of polio popping up in New York just last month.

“Those who are not immunized could be at risk,” Eshenaur said. “Fortunately, West Virginia has a state law that requires immunizations to attend public school. We have a very high vaccination rate in our children. And we want to keep that rate high to protect our children.”

If your child still needs their vaccines, you can call the health department to set up an appointment or your child’s pediatrician.
