The Marshall Thundering Herd officially opened Sun Belt Conference play Saturday night, facing off against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at Cajun Field in Lafayette, La.

Despite putting up a whopping 503 yards of offense and having multiple opportunities to seal a victory, the Herd found themselves on the losing end of a 54-51 thriller in double-overtime.

Quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson had an impressive night, going 24/31 for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Demarcus Lacey hauled in two of them in a 146-yard day, while running back Michael Allen had two rushing touchdowns on top of that.

Marshall's other touchdown came on a pick six courtesy of Paul Hutson III. However, that was about the lone highlight of an otherwise lackluster performance from the defense, especially in the second half.

Louisiana quarterback Lunch Winfield, who came off the bench to replace starter Daniel Beale, lit up Marshall's defense in the second half, throwing two passing touchdowns and scoring three more using his own two legs.

Marshall entered the fourth quarter with a 14-point advantage, but allowed Winfield and Louisiana to outscore the Herd 21-7 to tie the game at 41 and force overtime. Louisiana scored the game-tying touchdown with under 20 seconds left in regulation.

After both teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, the game went into a second overtime. Marshall struck first with a field goal, putting them up 51-48, but Winfield scored his fifth and final touchdown of the night, third rushing, with a 10-yard waltz into the endzone to lift Louisiana to the victory.

Before Winfield entered the game, Beale went a measly 7/15 for 72 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, including the Hutson pick six. Additionally, Beale had just five rushing yards on three carries.

Beale was then benched in favor of Winfield, who went 7/13 for 125 yards and the aforementioned two passing touchdowns. Winfield's three rushing touchdowns were the staple of a 13-carry, 129-yard rushing attack from the redshirt sophomore.

"Just really, really proud of our offense," Thundering Herd coach Tony Gibson said in his post-game press conference. "Defensively tonight, we didn't get it done. If you score 50-something points and lose a football game, that's unacceptable. We've got a lot of stuff we need to get fixed. We're going to keep fighting.

"It's embarrassing what we did in the second half of this game defensively."

Both teams are now 2-3 on the 2025 season and will each have a bye next week before continuing on with conference play at undetermined times on Oct. 11.

Marshall opens Sun Belt Conference play 0-1 and will return home to face Old Dominion at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Meanwhile, Louisiana starts SBC play 1-0, and will hit the road to take on James Madison at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Va.
