Marshall men's soccer takes down WVU 3-2 in 2OT to advance to Sun Belt championship game

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WCHS) — The Sun Belt Conference held its semifinal matchups for the men's soccer tournament on Wednesday night, and one half of the bracket was filled by the two Mountain State teams who have spent the last two years dueling for the SBC championship.
Squaring off at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, the No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers hosted the No. 12 Marshall Thundering Herd.
After another closely-fought edition of the Mountain State Derby, the visiting Thundering Herd took down the defending Sun Belt champions at WVU by a score of 3-2 in double overtime, punching Marshall's ticket into the championship game on Sunday.
Joao Alves was responsible for the game-winning penalty kick with just 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The win knocks defending Sun Belt champion WVU out of a shot of going back-to-back.
The game was still at all zeroes come halftime, but Carl Romberg broke through with the game's first goal, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the second half. Just five minutes later, WVU struck back when Isaac Scheer scored the Mountaineers' first goal of the game.
Another four minutes of play went by before Marshall quickly had its second goal of the night courtesy of Joao Roberto. In just nine minutes, both teams had scored a combined three goals.
Another 10 minutes went by scoreless until Marcus Caldeira leveled the game once again with WVU's second goal of the night. The game would remain that way through the end of regulation and through the first overtime.
It looked to be the same way after nine minutes of the second overtime period, but a handball from WVU set up the game-winning penalty kick from Alves, who also got credit for the assist on Roberto's earlier goal.
Marshall will now set it sights on the Sun Belt championship game against the University of Central Florida, who also clinched a championship berth on Wednesday with a 1-0 upset over No. 19 Kentucky.
With Marshall as the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt tournament and UCF at No. 5, the Herd will host the game as the higher-seeded team. The winner of that game will not only win the Sun Belt Conference, but will receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Sun Belt men's soccer tournament championship between UCF and No. 17 Marshall will take place at Hoops Family Field in Huntington on Sunday, with coverage beginning around 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
