Marshall hangs on against Elon, improves to 3-0 with 96-89 victory

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — The Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team played host to the Elon Phoenix on Wednesday night, both entering the game 2-0 and looking to keep their short yet still undefeated seasons alive.
A close fight between the two teams that lasted all night ended in Marshall getting the edge over Elon, snatching a 96-89 victory to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Wyatt Fricks led the charge for the Herd with 34 points. Matt Van Komen, Noah Otshudi, Caleb Hollenbeck and Andrew Fuquay also contributed 10 or more points each.
For the Phoenix, Chandler Cuthrell put up 28 points, while Randall Pettus and Bryson Cokley scored 17 and 14 points, respectively.
With the game relatively even in team stat lines, the biggest difference was arguably three-pointers. Elon shot 11/38, not even 29%, while Marshall was able to shoot 15/32, equating to almost 47%.
Elon falls to 2-1 and will head back home and turn its attention to Gardner-Webb, with tip-off slated for around 8 p.m. on Saturday with streaming coverage provided by FloSports.
Meanwhile, Marshall looks to keep its undefeated season alive on the road against Virginia. That game will tip-off around noon on Saturday, with streaming coverage on ACC Extra.
