The Marshall Thundering Herd traveled to Conway, South Carolina for a Thursday night college football matchup against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

The game was close after the first half, but a disastrous third quarter that featured four turnovers aided Marshall in its 44-27 loss to Coastal Carolina.

Marshall started off hot with a pick six on Coastal Carolina's opening drive. The teams then traded a couple of field goals, including a 55-yarder from Marshall's kicker Lorcan Quinn, who didn't start playing football until a few months ago

By the end of the first quarter, Marshall held a 10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, Marshall maintained a 20-17 lead.

The Thundering Herd then jumped out the gate to start the second half with a touchdown to take a 10-point 27-17 lead. Unfortunately, that would be the last time the Herd scored.

Coastal responded with its own touchdown minutes later as both teams scored a touchdown within five minutes of the start of the second half.

At that point, it all came unglued for Marshall, suffering its first turnover of the game on the first play of its next drive when QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson fumbled the ball and Coastal's Xamarion Gordon fell on top of it.

With the ball on Marshall's 18-yard line, Coastal took two plays to score again, finding a wide-open Bryson Graves to allow the Chanticleers to take their first lead of the night.

Just three plays into Marshall's ensuing drive, Rio-Wilson threw an interception to Dontae Lunan. Again, Coastal took advantage this time having to settle for a field goal to make it 34-27.

Rio-Wilson then threw a second interception two plays into Marshall's next drive, and Coastal again put up a field goal to cap its drive off.

Marshall's next drive looked promising, going seven plays and 48 yards before fumbling the ball back to Coastal yet again to end the third quarter. This time, Coastal couldn't do anything with the ball and punted it back to Marshall.

Both team's traded punts, but Coastal recovered its own punt after the punt bounced off of Marshall's Darrell Wheeling, creating a live ball that the Chanticleers recovered.

From there, Coastal QB Samari Collier tacked on another touchdown with his own two legs to make it 44-27. Marshall got the ball back three times after that, but the drives ended in a punt and two turnovers on downs, sealing the win for Coastal Carolina.

Marshall falls to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Thundering Herd are now tied for third in the Sun Belt East with Old Dominion. The Herd head back to Huntington for their next game on Saturday, Nov. 8 against James Madison, who is 7-1 on the season and an undefeated 5-0 in conference play.

That game, which serves as Marshall's annual '75' game in remembrance of the team's deadly plane crash in 1970, is slated to kickoff at noon on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
