Marshall comes back to beat Toledo 85-73 after trailing by 10 at half

TOLEDO, Ohio (WCHS) — The Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team, fresh off of a road win to start the season, traveled north on Saturday to take on the Toledo Rockets in Northwest Ohio.
Despite trailing by 10 points at halftime, Marshall outscored Toledo by 22 points in the second half to take an 85-73 victory over the Rockets.
Jalen Speer led the Herd in scoring, putting up 20 points in 35 minutes of action. Matt Van Komen earned a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
On the other side of the ball, Sean Craig and Sonny Wilson both scored 16 points each, leading the Rockets in scoring.
Marshall went 31/61 from the field and 15/37 in three-pointers, besting Toledo in both categories, as the Rockets only managed to shoot 26/64 from the field and was just 6/19 in three-pointers.
Toledo took a 40-30 lead over Marshall heading into halftime, but Marshall came out swinging to begin the second half with a 12-0 run. That kickstarted a 55-point second half for the Herd, outscoring Toledo 55-33 to surge to a 12-point victory.
It's Marshall's first win at Toledo in nearly eight years, last beating the Rockets in the John F. Savage Arena on Dec. 9, 2017. The win is also just the second win for Marshall in the last nine matchups against Toledo dating back to that 2017 game.
"Great team win," Marshall head coach Cornelius "Corny" Jackson said to open his post-game press conference. "It's hard to win here. I believe they are, in the last five years, 59-12 in this building, so they don't lose here a lot. But it was a great team win.
"We were down at the half, and our guys responded at halftime and shot the ball well. ... Couldn't be more proud of these guys for responding."
Marshall moves to 2-0 on the season and will head back to Huntington for its home opener on Wednesday against the Elon Phoenix. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN+.
Meanwhile, Toledo falls to 0-2 on the season and will head south on Interstate 75 to face off against the Wright State Raiders just outside of Dayton, Ohio. That game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday on ESPN+.
