Good Morning America delivers $25K donation from Target to Facing Hunger Food Bank

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Huntington food bank is in the national spotlight.
Like so many others right now, an increase in demand due to delays in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that one in six West Virginians rely on.
Wednesday morning, Good Morning America dropped off a gift for Facing Hunger Food Bank. Target donated $25,000 to help deal with the increased demand for food.
With the holiday season around the corner Facing Hunger CEO Tennyson Thornberry said the donation arrived at an ideal time.
“It's going to buy food. It's going to help people in need in our communities,” he said. “We are able to get food out to our communities by providing 200 families that we were serving up to almost 900 families.”
Thornberry said the food bank has gone from 20 trucks a month loaded with food to 20 trucks each week.
“We relate this to the pandemic level, but the pandemic on steroids,” Thornberry explained. “So many people need assistance because of SNAP funding. Our pantries are seeing increased levels. Almost every one of our pantries are seeing 100% increase or more, some up to an 1800% increase.”
The donation from Target is part of a larger total of $500,000 to Feeding America. Target representatives said prices have been lowered on about 3,000 items, including food, beverages and essential typically purchased during the holiday season.
Facing Hunger covers 17 counties in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
