The West Virginia Boys State Basketball Tournament kicked off Saturday with a Class AAAA title match as the No. 1 Morgantown Mohigans battled No. 3 Parkersburg South Patriots at the Charleston Coliseum.

A rematch of 2022’s quad-A championship saw Morgantown claim its second straight championship after downing Parkersburg South by a count of 65-58.

The teams traded buckets early to reach a 7-7 tie. Morgantown orchestrated an 11-0 run and led by five at the end of the first quarter.

The Patriots answered after the break to claim a lead, posting nine points while holding the opposition scoreless. By halftime, South was holding on to a 33-31 lead.

Hungry for a second consecutive state title, the Mohigans made adjustments and scored eight unanswered points after the break to recapture the lead. The Patriots then returned the favor, constructing an 8-0 run in a back-and-forth third quarter.

Morgantown took a five-point advantage into the final period and wouldn’t allow South to mount a comeback. The Mohicans sealed the state title run with an impressive 7-0 run in the final 2 minutes of play.

Three Mohigan starters reached double-digits in the scoring column. Brody Davis led all scorers with 18. Sha-Ron Young flirted with a triple-double after posting 17 points, snagging 10 rebound and dishing out 9 assists. Izzy Everett dropped another 14 for Morgantown.

The Patriots were led by Cyrus Traugh who went 6-of-16 from the floor to score 16 points. South's Aiden Blake and Nathan Plotner combined for 25 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mohigan victory gives Monongalia County a sweep of the tournament as the girls’ squad earned a state title last week, defeating Spring Valley 48-35.

Up next at the Charleston Coliseum, a Class A champion will be crowned as No. 1 James Monroe faces No. 3 Tucker County. Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
