The fourth West Virginia miner to die on the job in 2025 will be laid to rest this week.

Joey Mitchell, 25, of Kingwood was killed at the Mettiki Mine in the Mount Storm area of Tucker County on Thursday.

Mitchell worked as a scoop operator after graduating from Preston High School in 2020.

Mitchell was a sports fan with a love for derby cars. He was known as a loyal friend and a dedicated worker with a infectious sense of humor.

“Joey’s life was full of laughter, hard work and love,” his obituary reads. “Though his time here was far too short, the memories he created will live forever in the hearts of all who knew him.”

The Kingwood Funeral Home will be handling services which will be held Tuesday and Thursday. Interment will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Morgantown.
