The University of Charleston baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Glenville State and advance to Mountain East Conference Tournament winners bracket game 8.

The Pioneers built a 3-0 lead in the third inning whenCarlos De Jesus hit a 2-run homerun. Glenville State extended their lead in the sixth inning to 6-1 with a 3-run outburst on 4, hits and two UC errors. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles scored 4 runs on 6 hits to make it a 6-5 ballgame.

Carter Rust led off the sixth inning with a double to left field and scored when the next batter,Hector Carreon-Herrera doubled to right making it a 6-2 game. The game was delayed for ten minutes when the home plate was hit by a direct pitch to the arm, forcing him to the ground and eventually leaving the game.

Following the delay, Hurricane'sDamian Witty would drive in Carreon with a one out single to right field to cut the lead in half to 6-3. UC was not done and continued to rally with back-to-back two out singles byDrew Klaserner (RBI single to right field) and Casey Finck (RBI single to shortstop) making it a 6-5 game. The Pioneers would escape further damage, but momentum was clearly on the side of the Golden Eagles.

The evidence of momentum was clear when a turn of events still got the desired result in the seventh inning but not the way it was drawn up. Russt led the inning with a single to left and then stole second base.

Here's where it gets wild.Carreon bunts Rust over to third, but a ball from the UC bullpen got onto the field so the play was ruled dead, and Rust goes back to second. Instead of a runner at third and one out, there is now a runner at second and no outs until Rust gets picked off in a rundown. Calderon remains in the batter's box and triples to right giving UC a runner at third with one out.

Again, the situation the Golden Eagles wanted but certainly not the way they drew it up. Next batter, George Washington alum,Brayden McCallister hits a sac fly to right to score Calderon and tie the game at 6.

In the 8th inning,Evan Ulrich led off with a double and would score two batters later whenKlaserner hit a sac fly to right field to give UC their first lead 7-6. Charleston was able to hang on for the win and advance to the winners bracket.
