Seattle’s newly declared mayor-elect is a self-described Democratic Socialist, joining New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. As they are ready to take office, the Democratic Party continues to wrestle with which path to take ahead of next year’s midterms and the 2028 presidential election: move further left to take advantage of its base’s enthusiasm or move toward the center to position itself for battleground state voters.
