Local daycares stepping in to help keep kids in clean diapers

The Schoenbaum Center's Childcare and Learning Center is more than just a daycare for families on Charleston's West Side.

"We do have curriculums, we do lesson plans. We work on milestones with the children," acting director Jessica Bodkins said.

Reaching those milestones is much easier with a clean diaper. Staff not only change diapers, but supply their own when little ones need them.

"We buy a box about once a week for the whole center,"Infant Room Lead Teacher Cheryl Bourne said. "That way, if some of our children might not have diapers, we can make sure that we can provide that service for them, without their parents having to be stressed about it."

Bourne said they've been buying more lately, with more families saying it's getting tougher to make ends meet.

"We've seen a lot more," Bourne said. "We've had to buy more diapers recently, and more wipes and stuff, just because the costs have shot up so much, that the parents are struggling with it. So we're stepping in more and more to try to fill that gap so we can help them out."

It's a service the center doesn't mind doing, despite the cost. They approach things on a case by case basis.

"It does get tough," Bodkins said. "However, parents come to me with the situation that they're in and tell me, and we decide if there's going to a charge for the diapers or not a charge for the diapers."

"It means everything to us," Bourne said. "Everything we do here is to help the children and to help their families."

If parents find themselves in a tough situation, Bourne wants them to rest assured it's okay to ask for help.

"Never feel ashamed if you do not have the diapers or formula or any kind of resources you don't have," she said. "You can always speak with fellow people at your childcare or fellow moms. We are more than happy to help you out, to make sure you have what you need. We don't want you to be any more stressed than you already have to be."
