Sherman High School’s football program dates back to 1925. A century later, a new season is about to begin in Boone County.

Kevin Buzzard is back for his fifth season guiding the Tide program.

"It means everything to come out here and make sure the kids have got what they need," Buzzard said. "They're just great kids, a great bunch of kids."

The Tide will be young this season after last year's to trip to the playoffs, which ended in the second round to eventual Class A state champ Wahama. Buzzard said the Tide will feature some familiar names.

"The offense is still going to roll through Trey Lester, Dawson Green and Eli Pauley,” he said. “That's the heart of the team. We've got some young faces on the line. They're going to have to work their way through it.”

Coach Buzzard also discussed the other side of the ball.

"Defense is the same way,” Buzzard said. “We've got Dawson, he'll lead the pack at middle linebacker. On the defensive line, we've changed it up a little bit. We're running a little different defense than we usually do. Trey is in the back. Chase Southern is back there. He's about same category as Trey on his way up. It’s looking pretty good."

Despite the youth, optimism is high.

"It's been good,” Lester said. "Everybody is going to have their ups and downs, but I think overall we're getting better day by day."

Buzzard said his team is ready for Friday’s opener inside Zontini Field against Sissonville.

"They're ready to go,” he said. “They're anxious. They just can't wait to get out there and hit on somebody besides themselves, ust like every other team in the state I'd say."
