A historic chapter in maritime history closes: the SS United States' last voyage
MOBILE, AL (Amazing America) — The final voyage of the historic SS United States, the fastest ocean liner ever built, will be live streamed for the world to witness.
After nearly three decades docked in Philadelphia, the ship was relocated to Mobile Alabama in the spring of 2025, and now will be sunk off the Florida Panhandle to become an artificial reef.
Amazing America looks at the beginning of the SS United States’ final journey.
Okaloosa County, Florida has committed $68,000 to document the reefing of the ocean liner, which is expected to happen sometime next year.
The live stream will feature drone footage and underwater cameras capturing the entire voyage, from departure in Mobile, to her final resting place on the ocean floor off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
